Coil-overs in front
I would appreciate thoughts on my situation.
I recently attended an open house event at the Heidts factory about 1/2 hour away from my home.
I spoke with one of sales/ tech guys about installing coil-overs in front. He looked at my car, an MX and recommended their mustang II coil-over kit with 375lbs springs and tubular lower control arms. Which I purchased and have since run into two issues.
First, the upper shock mount is about 2” above the upper spring support. Apparently requires a shock that is 1 1/2” longer standard M II.
The Heidts rep, suggested rewelding the upper shock mount.
Second, when the lower control arm goes up it hits the corner of the frame. I think that I could grind off enough material to gain the clearance needed without removing any structure.
Wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences and if anyone has helpful thoughts.
I will try to post some photos.
Thanks

If it came through the photo shows the upper shock mount raised above the spring support.

Re: Coil-overs in front
Wow Ed, that's kinda weird.
Have always thought the shocks would be the same on the V8 cars and that Heidts screwed up, but the shock mount in your picture looked a little strange, so i looked at mine and it's about an inch tall. That makes me wonder if the MX uses something different. Maybe get a number off the old shock and see what it fits.
Not sure how to help you with this, but i can pop a wheel off and get an exact dimension of that top mount.

Re: Coil-overs in front
Jerry, thanks for the reply. Here’s some additional information.
The shocks that were on the when I purchased from the original builder were Monroe 5815, which is correct according to the manual I have. After page 6-52, there are a few pages *6-1 through *6-6 specifically for the MX.
The shock mount extension is over 2 3/4” and is shown on page *6-1.
Page 4-6 lists MX parts and specifies Monroe either 2067 or 5815.
Page 4-3 (presumably for non-MX) specifies Monroe 2118.
I have not been able to verify specs for either, but measured the shocks I recently removed, Monroe 5815, 9 1/2” compressed and 14 1/4” extended. From center of lower mounting tube to gap between upper bushings.
I took photos of the manual and additional suspension shots, but the files are too large to upload. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to convert and upload them.
Ed
Thanks to all for any thoughts regarding this.
